Aanand L Rai’s Shubh Mangal Saavdhan witnessed a tremendous response at the box office, and makers soon went onto create a sequel titled Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. The romantic comedy starred Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar in lead, and dealt with the issue of homophobia. Unexpectedly, it failed to impress the audiences equally as its original and the star cast has been opening up about it lately.

Recently, in our exclusive conversation, Neena Gupta shared how according to her it was the subject that restricted people from going to the theatre halls. She also cited a personal experience to prove her point. Now, Jitendra Kumar too has opened about the failure, and has some legitimate reasons.

EXCLUSIVE! Jitendra Kumar On Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Failure, Receiving Criticism Over His Portrayal

The Kota Factory fame actor said, “Trailer ko kaafi acha response mila tha toh kahi na kahi hume ye laga tha ki bohot ache se perceive kia jayega audience me. But yes, ye sunne aya tha ki kaafi sari family nahi dekhne gayi in the theatre because of the subject, jo hume dar tha. But after the trailer, we thought everyone liked it and people will definitely go and watch it. Jo bold topic pe hum deal kar rahe the plus us times pe bohot problems thi country me. Kaafi riots ho rahe the, aur kuch 10-15 din baad Corona fear bhi aa gaya tha. So, there were a lot of other things that affected it. For the unversed, there were many who even left that Jitendra Kumar wasn’t completely comfortable in his character. When asked about the same, the actor answered, “I don’t know why people felt that way. I was very comfortable; in fact, I did a lot of rehearsals. Maybe, the character was such, who couldn’t say a lot. I don’t think meri taraf se koi kami rahi. Maine apna 100% diya.”

Asked if he was intimidated by the fact that he was working with such experienced people, given the fact that it was his debut film, “Mai sabke sath pehle kaam kar chuka hu. Whether it is Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, I even met Ayushmann years ago. I have worked with him also. With Maanvi, I have worked a lot on TVF. So, it was nothing new for me. Everybody has been a friend and they made me as comfortable as they can. It was a lot of fun working with them and it was a lifetime experience for me. And I don’t think there could have been a better way to make a debut,” he concluded.
