Even as the coming together of Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol with their father, Dharmendra, in Yamla Pagla Deewana, might be the talk of town this week, it is insightful to go back and see how their first project together, Apne, did at the box-office. Interestingly, the Deols have played their real life role of father-son in both the films.

Yamla Pagla Deewana Movie Still, Apne Movie Still

‘Apne’, an emotional family drama with lots of action, was released on 29th June 2007, alongwith the Himesh Reshammiya starrer, Aap Kaa Surroor, and the Emraan Hashmi starrer, Awarapan. Among such stiff competition at the box-office that week, the Deols could hold their own, and ‘Apne’ bounced back at the box-office after a weak opening on Friday. At the end of its first week in theatres, the film had won immense appreciation from a section of the audience and had picked up in theaters in East Punjab and Gujarat. The film also did well in overseas territories and ended up being a plus film, in spite of certain audiences complaining about the film’s length and pace. Note that, in the same week, the medium-budgeted ‘Aap Kaa Surroor’ was far ahead at the box-office as compared to ‘Apne’. ‘Awarapan’, on the other hand, was dull and could make a mark only in the Nizam territory.

This time around, however, the Deols should not have much to worry about as the scenario is totally different from 2007. The only other films releasing with Yamla Pagla Deewana this Friday (January 14, 2011) are the Gul Panag starrer, Turning 30!!!; a small budget film, Mumbai Mast Kallander and the dubbed version of Hollywood film, The Green Hornet, all of which should present no challenge to YPD.

Now all that remains to be seen is if the Deols can be as good at comedy as they were in an emotional drama…
