The saying, ‘all is well that ends well’, is apt for the month of January 2012 as far as Bollywood releases are concerned. While the year started out with a lot of expectations from Abbas-Mustan’s Players, it only witnessed empty cinema halls and a string of flops till the release of Karan Johar’s Agneepath, which brought much cheer to the industry. Here’s a wrap up of the Bollywood hits and misses of January 2012:
Players
Box-office verdict: Flop
Release date: January 6, 2012
Abbas-Mustan’s multi-star cast Players, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sonam Kapoor, Sikander Kher, Omi Vaidya and Vinod Khanna, was the first major release of 2012. The official remake of the Hollywood film, The Italian Job, was about a gold heist adventure. The film, expected to be a fast-paced thriller, failed to live upto the critics and audience’s expectations. The loose screenplay, lack of adventure, the slow pace and the ordinary performances resulted in the failure of the film at the box-office.
Chaalis Chauraasi
Box-office verdict: Flop
Release date: January 13, 2012
Hriday Shetty’s Chaalis Chauraasi was about four men who impersonate policemen and leave for a mission to secure their futures. The film died a quick death at the box-office due to the lack of a convincing screenplay and saleable stars.
Ghost
Box-office verdict: Flop
Release date: January 13, 2012
The Shiney Ahuja and Sayali Bhagat-starrer, Ghost, haunted its makers more than the public. Supposed to be a horror film, it lacked every element that an effective horror film should have. A juvenile story coupled with dull direction and a lack of suspense made Ghost a box-office failure.
Sadda Adda
Box-office verdict: Flop
Date of release: January 13, 2012
Muazzam Beg’s Sadda Adda, starring Karan Sharma, Rohin Robert, Rohit Arora and others, was a story of six friends who share a single house in Delhi. The film had nothing that could involve the audience. A poor start at the box-office and the lack of known faces sealed the film’s fate at the box-office.
Tutiya Dil
Box-office verdict: Flop
Release date: January 13, 2012
Tutiya Dil was a story of Rhea Kapoor (Suzanna Mukherjee) who falls in love with her boss Karan Oberio (Nikhal Sabharwal). The direction and the performances of the film were fairly good, but the lack of a strong story, hit music and saleable stars resulted in its failure at the box-office.
Agneepath
Box-office verdict: Hit and running all over
Release date: January 26, 2012
Agneepath is revenge drama between Vijay (Hrithik Roshan) and Kancha (Sanjay Dutt), the remake of 1990’s Amitabh Bachchan-starrer of the same name. On its release day (Republic Day), the absence of a good film from a long time, the brilliant direction and mind-blowing performances by Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor, resulted in phenomenal success of Agneepath. It went on to smash box-office records.
