This is what brought back the Bollywood cult and nationalism twist to the present generation. Fresh faces and an inimitable storyline including friendship, war against corruption and political distress made Rang De Basanti an apt film for the times. This 2006 film was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and the star cast included Aamir, Soha, Siddharth, Kunal, Madhavan and Sharman. Kamlesh Pandey’s story line grasps the viewer into this Delhi plot where few friends kill a minister to avenge their dead Indian Air Force pilot. This 2005 venture is under the direction of Nagesh Kukunoor. Iqbal, played by Shreyas Talpade, is a mute and deaf talent in the world of cricket lurking in a village due to lack of proper tutelage and platform. He and his family are also suffering a financial crunch and finally Iqbal helps the family out of it after he starts playing state-level cricket. So why is this movie in this friendship list? Because the clean and perfect friendship between Iqbal and his mother, Iqbal and his sister, Iqbal and his coach, played by Naseeruddin Shah, and the subtle bond between the mother, sister, coach and the player is a signpost example of the fact that friendship is beyond religion, age, relationships and definitely society.  The writer’s credit go to none other than  Nagesh Kukunoor himself .

Farhan Akhtar, the talented son of Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, introduced himself to Bollywood with this movie in 2001. Dil Chahta Hai is now almost a cult favorite. The story line distinctly features 3 friends, Aakash, Sameer and Siddharth. These characters are played by Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna respectively. Writers’ credits go to Farhan and Kassim Jagmagia. Critics often feel that the reason this movie proved to be such a hit is because it dealt with the fact the three closest friends don’t have the same personality type or characteristics and also dealt with the social taboo of loving an older woman. The plot revolves around how the trio is set apart due to their mutual love interest in an older lady, Tara and years later, when they re-unite, how their friendship unfolds.
