Prakash Jha-Ajay Devgan

Rise: Ajay Devgan had a low period after his father’s project, Hindustan Ki Kasam, bombed. As per grapevine, Ajay started accepting roles coming his way as the debts kept piling. He had lowered his price and a lot of directors and producers got an easy access to the actor. Prakash Jha was one of those who took Ajay on board. The start Dil Kya Kare starring Ajay and his actress wife- Kajol, was not so inspiring. Though the emotional drama went unheard of, it made Ajay very confident about his association with Jha. Then came the hard hitting social drama GangaaJal, which went on to earn critical acclaim as well.  The success took the director-actor duo to a new level of confidence and they soon came up with their next social issue-based film Apaharan. This film was based on the ‘business of kidnapping’ mostly in North India and won Jha the Filmfare award for Best Dialogue.

Fall: Everything seemed fine and it looked like the duo had created their niche in meaningful commercial cinema. And then Rajneeti happened.

It was Prakash Jha’s biggest film in terms of budget, star-cast etc. It was based on the safest script: the epic ‘Mahabharat’. And that was where the friendship fell short. Multistarrers have a knack of making things sour between stars because of competition on screen-time. Throughout the film Ranbir and Ajay were pitted against each other and Ajay felt that it weakened his character. Ajay had a valid reason to be upset, going by reactions of his fans after watching the movie. Whispers about the strained relations between the talented actor-director have been making rounds ever since.

Koimoi Jodi Verdict:  Let’s hope that this jodi buries their differences soon and teams up for cinema we can actually be proud of.
