Though most actresses have such a problem with the term women centric films, none can deny that the term exists. The ease with which a Queen and Mardaani or even Mary Kom is coming our way all in one year, it is commendable. Never before was it possible in Bollywood before this. Heroines are now becoming more independent is not the right statement to make but the intelligence of the audiences are allowing newer stories to hold their ground. The fact that a Queen can manage to get some profit for itself was a testimony of the fact that audiences are accepting good stories.
Is it something new in Bollywood? Not entirely. There were films where glam​-​dolls have managed to work well at the box office. Phool Baney Angarey, Khoon Bhari Malang and even a Chalbaaz were all paving way for a year like 2014 where a Mary Kom or a Mardaani can take a steady sure shot opening at the box office.
And still all the afore mentioned films haven’t managed to touch a 100 crore figure which is such an easy fare for films led male actors.
Here’s a list of actresses who made 100 crore an easy box office prospect for any heroine based Bollywood film. ​
Vidya Balan
With The Dirty Picture making 80 crore and Kahaani earning 60 crore, the actress can be called the first mover in recent times to crack a big number at the Box Office. Content wise both films fascinated the audiences and Balan was writing history with it. Though post a string of successes, Bobby Jasoos this year despite being a great film couldn’t work too well at the box office. But the actress still has the game changing streak in her.
Priyanka Chopra
​She indeed is a superstar and when failure doesn’t make an actress forgettable, know she has enough mettle to keep herself going. Chopra chick is just out of that league. Beginning with films like Fashion and 7 Khoon Maaf and now Mary Kom, she was clear since the beginning that she doesn’t need her career to finish for her to be able to do lead a film all by herself. Mary Kom might have got mixed reviews, the film has earned 50 crore plus business easily at the box office. And now with Zoya validating her caliber in her ensemble film Dil Dhadakne Do and Bhandarkar reviving her zestful side in Madamji, chances are good that she will be the opener of 100 crore club for women-based films in Bollywood.
Deepika Padukone
​The fact that Finding Fanny took such a brilliant opening is enough to explain that the actress is a brand that pulls crowds. Overshadowing Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express and making Ranveer Singh look luminous in Ramleela, she has had 4 back to back 100 crore films last year. If anyone can do it in the industry, she can because clearly this is her spell!
Kangana Ranaut
​She has always been a fabulous actress but no one has realized the depth of it before gems like Fashion and mostly Queen. The film still gets rated as the one of most successful films of the year. The actress has got the critics going gaga over her and the trade circles are ranting about her ability to single handedly make a film work. Though one can argue that it wasn’t her but the film because clearly Revolver Rani did not work despite her presence but if she has done it once, there is every chance that she can repeat it bigger and better next time!
Katrina Kaif
If one has seen Ek Tha Tiger, it cannot be called a Salman Khan film alone. Not only for its chemistry but the film’s flawless action especially of Katrina Kaif’s was crucial in getting crowds to theater. Though she hasn’t led a film alone so far, with films like Bang Bang, Phantom ​and ​ Jagga Jasoos in her kitty, the actress is capable of making 100 crores happen if she gets to lead a film.
Alia Bhatt
Priyanka Chopra in a recent interview exclaimed that the 100 crores of 2 States doesn’t belong to Arjun Kapoor alone because no one can deny Alia in the film. After Highway getting her critical acclaim and 2 States getting her love of the crowds, of the younger lot, she is surely a star who can get audiences paying the bucks to watch her lead a film as well as gross 100 crores single handedly. Obviously experience has a certain value and Alia has a long way to gain that but ​her innocence and charm connects with all smoothly and that can work in her favor.
