If you have seen “Barfi”, you would have loved “Barfi”. It transcends you back in time into a Charlie Chaplin era of films, simple and yet very powerful. It is a narrative which tells a very innocent story of a deaf and dumb boy, Barfi played by Ranbir Kapoor and an autistic girl, Priyanka Chopra.
The film is also the Bollywood Debut of the popular Southern Star, Ileana D’Cruz. The film of minimal words, Barfi goes beyond conveying that love needs no language. It presents to its audience, stories of differently abled people in the most intriguing and enthralling way possible.
The film garnered rave reviews from the critics. And now, there is a new feather in its cap. “Barfi” is India’s Official Entry in The Foreign Film Category at the Oscars. It is essentially a romantic comedy which gives its viewers moments of sheer joy and exquisite pleasure. Even in its emotional moments, the film leaves you with a sense of warmth.
“Barfi is the Indian entry to the Oscars. We selected it to represent the country out of 20 films,” informed Supran Sen, The Secretary General of the Film Federation of India to Press Trust of India, who later confirmed the news. Barfi was pitted against brilliant films from like “Kahani”, “Gangs of Wasseypur” and so on.
Anurag Basu known for his meticulous art of direction has done a fine work with “Barfi”. Critics have lauded him and his skill with compliments and applauses. The same goes for Ranbir whom critics can’t just stop praising. Priyanka lives up to her role with perfection and Ileana works as a breath of intoxicating freshness for the film.
The team of “Barfi” and the entire team at UTV cannot contain their delight at the wonderful news. Their official quote goes, “We are honoured that Barfi has been selected to represent India as its official entry to the Academy Awards 2013. Barfi is very close to the hearts of all of us at UTV, and it gives us great satisfaction that a film we have developed and nurtured from its inception has met with so much love from audiences and critics worldwide. An added source of pride is that this is the 4th UTV film in the last 7 years to have been selected to represent India at the Academy awards; our earlier selections being Rang De Basanti (2006), Harishchandrachi Factory (2009) and Peepli Live (2010)” conveyed by Siddharth Roy Kapur who is the CEO of UTV Films and the Managing Director – Studios, Disney UTV.
Meanwhile “Barfi” continues to rake up good money at the Box-Office. Well into its second week, the film has already got in a collection of more than a 75 crores and the news will just boost up the film’s popularity. The film is all set to target a 90 crore above business at the box office, both India and overseas.
Critics assure that this is well deserved achievement for the film. In a country, where mainstream cinema is mostly trash, “Barfi” has managed to channelize audiences towards a more charming cinematic experience.
