Superman has a new dame to rescue – three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams will play journalist Loise Lane in Superman: Man of Steel in the next instalment in the superhero series.

The redheaded actress who played the love interest of Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter, got the news on a phone call with director Zack Snyder. British actor Henry Cavill will play the role of Superman in the film while Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Superman’s adoptive parents.

The last movie in the Superman series, Superman Returns (2006), made at a whooping $270 million dollars, was considered a commercial failure.

Amy Adams joins the ranks of Margot Kidder, who starred opposite Christopher Reeve in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and Kate Bosworth, who played the journalist in ‘Superman Returns’.

‘Superman: Man of Steel’ is set to released in December 2012.
