Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao decided to go separate ways after staying together for one and a half decades. She and the Bollywood star maintained a friendly relationship even after their split, and she attended Aamir’s daughter Ira Khan and Nupur Shikhare’s wedding. In a recent interview, Rao reflected on her divorce from Khan and shared the reason behind that decision.
Kiran and Aamir were married for 15 years. They also have a son, Azad. Aamir was previously married to Reena Dutta. Rao is an established personality in the film industry. She is an Indian film producer, screenwriter, and director. Rao is the co-founder of the Paani Foundation and a board member of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image.
In a recent interview with Brut, Kiran Rao revealed that she and Aamir Khan lived together for one year before getting married. She shared her thoughts on marriage. She said, “We knew that it’s a great institution if you can function as an individual as well as a couple within that institution.”

She added, “I think the thing that we don’t talk about enough is how marriage tends to stifle especially women… There’s so much responsibility on the woman to run the house, to keep the family together… I took my sweet time, so I didn’t have any worry about it.”
Regarding her relationship with Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao said, “I knew I needed my space. I wanted to live independently, and I needed that to grow myself. I felt that it was for my own growth, and Aamir acknowledged that as well and supported that… So I didn’t fear a divorce.”
For the unversed, Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan got married in 2005 and parted ways in 2021. On the work front, Kiran’s latest Laapataa Ladies received positive reviews on its release last month.
