‘Iss baar Christmas pacchees ko hai?’
Only Anil Kapoor could have said this innocently with a straight face and not just get away with it but also bring in loads of laughter amongst the audiences.
Unfortunately, though, Mubarakan just didn’t get its due when it released three years back. A roller coaster zany ride with no dull moments whatsoever, it was about twin brothers (played by Arjun Kapoor) and their uncle (Anil Kapoor). With the central theme that of a big fat Punjabi marriage (that included the leading ladies Ileana D’Cruz, Athiya Shetty and Neha Sharma), there were celebratory moments galore, and hence the title Mubarakan.
While Arjun Kapoor did well with his characteristic deadpan humour, it was Anil Kapoor who set the house on fire as a boisterous Sardarji. Anees Bazmee made sure that after working with Anil Kapoor on many films, Welcome and No Entry being the most memorable, a well-crafted character was written again for the veteran actor in Mubarakan.

All of that worked as well but surprisingly the film didn’t really reach out to the audiences. The awareness was there but not the interest build up despite a racy promo. As a result, the film took a shockingly low start with the first day turning out to be mere 5.16 crores.
The film did grow over the weekend but not in an exponential manner, something that was required for it to at least break even. When compared to a start of 5.16 crores, the film eventually did well enough to go over the 55 crores mark, which is 11 times the first day numbers, hence establishing that the good word of mouth had eventually come into play. However, the strat was so slow that by the time the film did start gaining traction, it was too late and newer released had started dominating the market.
Nonetheless, the film did get its due on the satellite circuits and now has been doing quite well in the OTT space as well. Especially during the current lockdown situation, the out and out family entertainer is one of the most-watched Bollywood films currently to beat the blues.
Do play it on, you won’t be disappointed. The film deserves it.
