Shah Rukh Khan’s character pushed away his girlfriend from the top of a building and the audiences roared [Baazigar]. Then soon after he went crazy for the love of his life and the audiences gave a nod of approval [Darr]. A year later he created havoc in the life of a woman who didn’t reciprocate his life and audiences didn’t mind this time around either [Anjaam].
Well, this was the kind of filmography that Shah Rukh Khan boasted of right at the beginning of his career in 1993-94. A new anti-hero was born who had possessed quite a few evil traits, but always had an emotional reason for that, something that struck a chord with the audiences.
Baazigar as well as Darr were major hits, and when Shah Rukh Khan aimed to score a hat-trick with Anjaam, the results weren’t overwhelming but then they were not bad either. Made at a budget of around 3 crores, the film netted close to 5 crores in its lifetime run, a decent number back then. That had ensured that yet again, Shah Rukh Khan had a success to his name.
Though in Baazigar, Shah Rukh Khan had worked with newcomers [Kajol, Shilpa Shetty], Darr had him pitched opposite an established actress Juhi Chawla with Sunny Deol as the formidable opposition. In Anjaam, he had none other than Madhuri Dixit opposite him, though this was not a conventional love story by a far stretch.
In fact the film could have covered a greater distance but then a section of audiences found it too violent, with some graphic scenes turning out to be truly disturbing. Moreover, the narrative too became too dark, especially in the second half, as director Rahul Rawail took a no holds bar approach.

One of the most memorable parts about the film though is its songs. If ‘Badi Mushkil Hai’ is remembered till date for its melody and Shah Rukh Khan’s child-like act, Madhuri Dixit’s raunchy ‘Channe Ke Khet Mein’ was extremely popular amongst the masses.
Post Anjaam, Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit went on to feature in Dil To Paagal Hai, Devdas, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam and Koyla as well, all of which were good successes.
