Back in 2001 when Akshay Kumar played Amitabh Bachchan’s son in Ek Rishtaa, the film was much appreciated for its emotional content and heartfelt narrative by filmmaker Suneel Darshan. Hence, when the duo were returning in yet another father-son tale in Waqt: The Race Against Time, there was good curiosity to check out what new would filmmaker Vipul Shah bring on the table in a similar set up. Moreover, he had already directed Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar in a well made thriller Aankhen [2002] and this was now a change in genre.

Well, as it turned out, Waqt – despite a similar premise of a father-son tale – ended up entertaining audiences all over again. Released on 22nd April 2005, the film’s promo had seen a good response and the songs (especially, ‘Do Me A Favour – Let’s Play Holi’) had turned out to be popular as well. At the theaters too the film opened well with first day collections of around 2 crores. The word of mouth too was good and as a result the film had a fine run and ended up netting 23 crores in its lifetime, a healthy number back then.

As a matter of fact the film found a place in the Top-10 grossers of the year as it found itself at the 7th position. It was a particularly good year for both Akshay Kumar as wel as Amitabh Bachchan. Akshay Kumar had two of his films in the Top-10, with Garam Masala at the 4th spot. On the other hand Amitabh Bachchan had as many as three films in there with Bunty aur Babli (no. 2), Waqt: The Race Against Time (no. 7), Black (no. 8) and Sarkar (no. 10) in the Top-10, a truly remarkable feat.

The film was also special for the leading ladies as Priyanka Chopra had delivered yet another success with Akshay Kumar after Andaaz, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Aitraaz. On the other hand Shefali Shah, wife of Vipul Shah, set a record of being one of the youngest actresses to play Amitabh Bachchan’s wife, what with an age gap of 30 years!

Today, as Waqt: The Race Against Time celebrates 15 years since its release, one waits to see if near future Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan would come together again for yet another entertaining tale.
