‘MNIK’ Opens In Bombay… But Just

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) finally decided to release the controversial My Name Is Khan in one property each in Bombay city.The public in Bombay, therefore, now has a chance to catch the much anticipated film albeit in select multiplexes.Looking to the move of the multiplexes, some single-screen cinemas in the metropolis have also decided to open the film.However, the release in the rest of Maharashtra stands cancelled in view of the Shiv Sena threats to cinemas across the state following the pro-Pakistani utterances of Shah Rukh Khan two weeks back in regard to IPL cricket.Of the multiplexes in Bombay, Inox opened the film in the 12 noon show in its Nariman Point property while Big is screening it in its Wadala property.

Fame,Inorbit Mall Malad and Cinemax Infiniti Mall Versova also opened the film while Fun Republic is showing it in its Andheri property.PVR started the screening of MNIK in its Goragaon property. The MAI took the decision after the Maharashtra chief minister and the Bombay police commissioner’s pleas to it to go ahead with the release.Both of them have assured the multiplexes and cinemas complete security.If nothing untoward happens, the multiplexes will open the film in their other properties during the course of the day.

It is clear that the controversy that started between Shah Rukh Khan, the hero and co-producer of MNIK and the Shiv Sena, has now assumed a political colour.While Shiv Sena is trying hard to stall the eagerly awaited film’s release, the government is moving heaven and earth to ensure the smooth release of the film.

Of course, given the fractured/token release, it is evident that the ruling party in Maharashtra has had to eat humble pie in the face of blatant gundaism of the Shiv Sena.Insiders reveal that the multiplexes agreed to open the film in select properties as they do not want to antagonise the government.Meanwhile, multiplexes in Gujarat state cancelled the first show in view of threats from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad which is also opposing the remarks of SRK.

However, early reports suggest that they may be allowed to screen the film after the token boycott call given by the VHP.
