Ungli is a five track album that is not exceptionally appealing. In spite of being composed by four composers, Sachiin-Jigar, Salim-Sulaiman,Gulraj Singh, Aslam keyi this album falls a little flat with only a couple of tracks worth hearing on a loop mode. While usually a film starring Emraan Hashmi is known to have excellent music, this one turns out a exception!
Dance Basanti starts with good Punjabi beats and is groovy enough. There seems to be an extra effort to make the lyrics quirky but it does not work well for the song. This song has the quality to entertain you until its first verse post that it completely loses its essence. Its upbeat and cheerful the music is not well blended and it loses constancy after the first verse. Only half the song is worth a hear.
Every romantic song doesn’t have to sound mushy. ‘Pakeezah‘ has amazingly fresh and lively music. The guitar strumming is a treat to the ears and so is Gulraj Singh’s voice which totally melts your heart. Pakeezah has beautiful lyrics and also being composed by Gulraj Singh is one of the best songs from the album.
This song will instantly remind you of ‘Khoon Choos le‘ from Go Go Gone. The crux of this song is in its lyrics. Musical arrangements too work just fine for it. ‘Adarniya Ungli‘ is a timepass number that will remain with you all through the film’s buzz but longevity is not expected from it. All the brownie points for this song go to its lyrics.
The song starts out impressively with a beautiful guitar strumming and that is exactly what sets the tone for this song. The vocals of Armaan Malik are quite impressive and over the song gives a nice complacent feel. There is a certain calm attached to this song which is a signature Salim-Suleiman thing and probably that is also because the song is addressed to God or ‘Protector’ which essentially means Auliya. This is my second pick from the album.
This song is again like ‘Dance Basanti‘, it has good beats and vocals but it doesn’t quite liven up. The lyrics are well penned and we are sure the video may also cause a stir but as an audio song it is not quite appealing. Sachiin-Jigar have done better than this and and this is certainly an average attempt from their side. Well, I would surely have to mention that an Emraan Hashmi dialogue towards the end of the song was quite entertaining.
Ungli in spite of being a crisp album with only five songs coming from different composers does not live up to its expectations. The album gives us average songs which are certainly hummable but have no longevity. My picks from the album are ‘Auliya‘ and ‘Pakeezah‘ and the rest may grab attention only till the film is creating hype. Overall, the album is average, nothing great or new about it. I am going with a 2.5/5 for this album.
