Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most ambitious projects, Bajirao Mastani is all set to release next week. The film stars Ranveer Singh as Peshwa Bajirao, Deepika Padukone as Mastani and Priyanka Chopra as Bajirao’s first wife, Kashibai. Once again, the director himself takes the mantle of composing the music of his film. We surely know, SLB has an eye for good music, hence his previous attempts such as Ram Leela too have been successful. Let’s find out what’s in store for this period drama.
Deewani Mastani – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
The opening song of the album is ‘Deewani Mastani‘. There is a unique blend of Maharashtrian as well as Qawalli touch to it. It starts with Ganesh Chandanshive’s Marathi lines and further transcends into Shreya Ghoshal’s beautiful ballad on love. The song’s lyrics are all about Mastani who has fallen deeply in love and the music does convey it.The song is not just a treat to watch, but to hear it too!
Aayat – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
I completely love songs with a classical layering to it and especially with Arijit Singh’s voice to them. Aayat starts off slow and soon picks up into a beautiful classical rendition. It is more like a semi-classical Ghazal. In between, the song also has Qawalli portions which are blended flawlessly. This is one of the most soothing tracks from the album.
Malhari – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Malhari is a complete mismatch in the album. The song hardly seems like it comes from the era that the movie is set in. Portrayed to be more like a victory song for the Peshwas, the song is high-pitched and loud. Vishal Dadlani croons this celebratory track. What is another problem with the song is the fact that the lyrics too are quite controversial. We wonder if the upper-caste Peshwas would use a language with words such as ‘Vaat Lavli’.
Mohe Rang Do Laal – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Mohe Rang Do Laal is a treat for the ears with Shreya Ghoshal’s melodious voice. The ‘Kathak’ number is extraordinary and reminds us a lot of the Devdas songs featuring Madhuri Dixit. Pandit Birju Mahraj also features in this and we are sure it is going to be a sight for the eyes. For a person with classical tastes, this song is a must-have.
Albela Sajan – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is immensely fond of Ustad Khans’s 1970 number Albela Sajan. After revamping it in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, the director once again gives it a different twist. This time, the song is a chorus number as several singers such as Shashi Suman, Kunal Pandit, Prithvi Gandharva, Kanika Joshi, Geetikka Manjrekar and Rashi Ragga come together for it. It is much chirpier than the previous one. The music is impressive with Sitar notes.
Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Next up is, Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi, which is a completely mesmerizing romantic number. The lyrics have been penned by A.M. Turaz and they are extremely impressive. It is the expression of love in the most varied form. The song has been sung by singers Payal Dev and Shreyas Puranik. This is definitely one of my favorite songs from the soundtrack.
Pinga – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
One of the most controversial songs, Pinga received a lot of flak after it’s release. The song which was supposed to be similar to Dola Re from Devdas with Priyanka and Deepika pulling off a dance-off, did not work much. Even though Bhansali has tried his best to come up with a Marathi folk song, he seemed terribly confused as he mixed up two separate forms together. Shreya Ghoshal and Vaishali Made have sung this song.
Aaj Ibaadat – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Aaj Ibaadat is a strange combination of Hindu and Muslim devotional hymns. Various artists come together for this number. It creates quite a Sufi style atmosphere with it’s holy chants. Although as an audio track, this is not the one you would often listen to.
Fitoori – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Fitoori is more like a Lavni number in the album. It is quite similar to Ata Vajle Ki Baara in certain portions. Sanjay Leela Bhansali goes quite wrong in the choice of music with the Marathi folk scene. There is much more to Marathi music than Lavni and especially since the Peshwas have been a prestigious family in the caste structure too, I am not sure how these songs fit in it.
Gajanana – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
Gajanana is basically the Ganpati Aarti that has been revamped by the composer. The Aarti gets a larger than life video which is quite Bhansali style. Sukhwinder Singh croons powerfully, making this track high on energy along with the beats.
The Last Word – Bajirao Mastani Music Review
The Bajiraio Mastani soundtrack is a mixed bag. The classical numbers outshine the others. My picks from the album include, Aayat, Ab Tohe Jane Na Doongi and Deewani Mastani. The album is expected to be a treat visually too. I am going with a 3/5 for the album.
