Marjaavaan Box Office Review: Expectations

When it’s a Milap Zaveri film, there are always good expectations at the Box Office. Most of his films, be it as a writer or director, have done very well at the Box Office. His last film as a director, Satyamev Jayate did very well at the BO despite competition from another big film Gold and now even its sequel is on cards.

With Marjaavaan, he is carrying quite positive vibes around because the trailers and music have received a quite good response from the public.

Marjaavaan Box Office Review: Impact

The trailers promised an engaging romantic action drama with a high dose of emotions. While the film delivers everything which it promised it lacks an engaging screenplay which is always one of the biggest factors in driving the film. The film has emotions but lacks connect, has a few good dialogues but they don’t come out that well because they haven’t been delivered to match the requirement.

At times I felt, it’s a great opportunity missed. The script had elements that could’ve been so good. The scene in which Raghu kills Zoya could’ve been very emotional if the execution of the film was good. But sadly it comes out lacklustre. Also, the scene in which the goons attacked Shaad Randhawa’s character. It was brilliant but hardly evokes any emotion and that’s the case of poor execution.

Apart from these scenes, the whole second half dips when it had to build upon the drama. The whole revenge plot doesn’t make any sense because the drama hasn’t been established properly.

Sidharth Malhotra delivers a fine performance and he seems to have shown growth as an actor too. However, the kind of character he plays here required a much more skilled actor. Tara Sutaria looks so gorgeous and elegant. Watching her is like watching a dream and she gives a good performance. Rakulpreet Singh is just about okay. But it is Riteish Deshmukh who keeps you hooked in the otherwise half baked drama. His dark character and his performance is so good that want to love to hate him but instead fall in love with him as an actor. Riteish has again proved that he can do more than comedy. It’s time he starts experimenting with his skills more. Shaad Randhawa is a surprise and gives one of the best performances.

Milap Zaveri has missed such a good opportunity. I am saying this again and again because it hurts to see a film with such potential falling flat on its face.

Marjaavaan is still not an outright bad film. Apart from Riteish Deshmukh’s performance, it has some really well-choreographed action scenes which will be liked by the audience. It’s just that all of this is not enough to encourage the audience to go and watch the film in theatres.

Marjaavaan Box Office Review: Prospects

Sadly, Marjaavaan won’t find much patronage even from its target audience which is in huge numbers. A mass entertainer without big stars should have very good drama to attract crowd which it doesn’t have. The film will still do average kind of business at the Box Office and may save itself from being a Flop. The budget of the film is not big so it’ll easily recover its costs.

A lifetime business of Marjaavaan could fall in 40-45 crores range.

What’s Good: A genuine Riteish Deshmukh trying to justify a not-so-genuine story, “mass-masala aur theek-thaak sab kuch daala, par Marjaavaan ko banane mein Milap se ek aur cheez bhi gir gayi – dher saara meldorama”

What’s Bad: Only if I was allowed to write this entire review filled with dialogues, but I’m not & that’s bad & oh, the film too!

Loo Break: This film might teach you how to take loo breaks even when it ain’t required.

Watch or Not?:You might not return as the similar person you were before entering the cinema hall.

Raghu (Sidharth Malhotra) works for Anna (Nassar) who has a dwarf son Vishnu (Riteish Deshmukh). Raghu is loyal to Anna & Vishnu hates him because he isn’t daddy’s favourite. Enters Zoya (Tara Sutaria) who cannot speak but no one can stay silent in a Milap Zaveri film, even she gets to stay dialogues. Zoya, from Kashmir, is in a quest to search for kids who can sing in Mumbai’s slum area. Hmm!

As Raghu helps Zoya find those kids, he forgets he’s already in a relationship Aarzoo (Rakul Preet Singh). Few item songs later, as we’ve seen in the trailer, Vishnu kills Zoya (not because she’s too loud for a dumb person) but he has his reasons. So, now Raghu hates Vishnu as much as Vishnu hates him & then starts the revenge.

Marjaavaan Movie Review: Script Analysis

“Na Tipu, na Sultan, na Azhar, Salman bhai ka fan hoon, naam hai Mazhar.” “Maarunga kanpatti pe, dard mitega Ganpati pe.” “3 foot ke body se, 2 takke ki jaan nikal.” This actually had all the ammo of becoming a Gunda or Loha of our generation, the only problem is, some actors tried to act well. Hence, it ended up being in the “Na ghar ka, na ghaat ka” zone.

The only justification for penning this melodramatic story is following a formula without giving any solid thoughts about it. Milap took himself too seriously after Satyameva Jayate and tried to pull strings to the extent that everything was broken. It’s a commercial potboiler cooked on an extremely high temperature serving burnt food (just Googled, burnt food might give you cancer).

Marjaavaan Movie Review: Star Performance

So, it gets tough to judge the performances in movies such as this because there’s so much wrong, it’s hard to find anything right. Sidharth Malhotra is fine with Raghu, because of the theme of the film he goes overboard at times. That’s fine because a bad story rare lets anyone stay subtle.

Riteish Deshmukh is one of those exceptions because he enjoys whatever he does. He tries to convince you that he’ll unabashedly be Vishnu and you’ll have to adjust your mood according to him. He is very good at whatever he was offered. Tara Sutaria is an eternal beauty stuck in the wrong film. She manages to express herself very well but everything goes in vain because of the script.

Rakul Preet could’ve been a lot better and an asset to the film. She’s underutilised. Nora Fatehi’s single song manages to attract the maximum eyeballs than the entire movie combined. Ravi Kishen is as wasted as ‘ay’ in okay.

Marjaavaan New Trailer Review: Milap Zaveri as a filmmaker and writer understands the pulse of masses and with every film promises nothing but entertainment. Be it his dialogues for Grand Masti, Main Tera Hero, and Ek Villain or his direction in Satyameva Jayate – the audience for which his films are intended, throw much love on them.

Now he is coming back with another mass entertainer Marjaavaan which stars Sidharth Malhotra, Tara Sutaria, Rakul Preet Singh & Riteish Deshmukh in lead.

The first trailer of the film was released in September and received a very good response from the public. Now just two weeks before the release of the film, the makers have come up with a new trailer.

Just like the first one, Marjaavaan’s new trailer tries to convince its audience that this is going to be a wholesome affair for them. It has romance, emotions, action, Zaveri style dialoguebaazi, beautiful music and gorgeous looking heroines. The audience obviously can’t resist these ingredients being served to them in a single big platter but my only concern here is that the dish doesn’t look that exciting as it’s supposed to be. I mean everything is fine and even though it promises a better actor in Sidharth Malhotra and an exciting performance by Riteish Deshmukh, the promo could’ve been cut in a better way. There’s so much happening in the 2 minute trailer that it becomes too much to take. Honestly, the second trailer is slightly below par if compared to the first one.
