Tamasha has opened on expected lines. It was always on the cards that the Imtiaz Ali directed film would take a decent to good start at the Box Office. Since the film has a niche appeal to it and was always going to rely primarily on word of mouth amongst the target audience, anything over 10 crore would have been fine for Tamasha. In that aspect, an opening day number of 10.87 crore is good enough as with this, the base has been set for the film so that it can grow from this point on.

If one looks at it from the perspective of the actors in there, this is Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest opening of the year. His Roy (where he had an extended guest appearance) had brought in 10.4 crore on Friday while Bombay Velvet was way behind [5.2 crore]. On the other hand Deepika Padukone’s Piku was at 5.3 crore, only to grow from strength to strength. In fact Imtiaz Ali’s last foray with Ranbir [Rockstar – 10.6 crore] and Deepika [Love Aaj Kal – 8.25 crore] had opened less. Also, a niche Highway, which had brought together Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Nadiadwala for the first time, had a moderate opening of 3.42 crore.

Considering these factors, an opening in the excess of 10 crore is a good start for the film. Moreover, it is now also the 10th Biggest Opening of 2015, hence surpassing Roy [10.4 crore] and the next best, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon [10.15 crore].

While the reviews for the film are mixed, while ranging between average to very good, it was expected as well since this isn’t a conventional love story in the offering. It would be interesting to see how the film escalates over the weekend. Meanwhile, it can be said though that the Sajid Nadiadwala and UTV combination is continuing to ensure good opening of films, what with their last outing Phantom (8.46 crore) seeing a good start as well.
