No one except Ranveer Singh could have rapped about Sex with such wild boisterousness! And he did take a lead over his contemporaries when he became the driving force of one the recent times’ most memorable advertising campaigns. Ranveer Singh, in an interview with Koimoi, told us that he did it on impulse. While driving home one day, he wondered to himself ‘koi condom kyun nahin bechta?’ He told us, “I would pass by hoardings and see celebrities selling everything except condoms. The only condom advertisements in India are those lusty, provocative ones. That should never be the only prevailing definition of sex that’s out there. We have evolved as a society and our attitudes towards the subject too has frankly changed. Sex can be the subject of an open and healthy conversation and high time someone needs to point that out! If that is not brought to light, people will keep treating it as taboo. I wanted to create dignity with the concept of sex. It was surprising to me why doesn’t any mainstream actor endorse the use of condoms. I asked my people to call Durex. Durex jumped at the idea. I knew it was a huge risk. I was either going to get two thumbs up or one hard slap. Durex allowed me to drive the whole thing my way and in no time it became #DoTheRex.”
Continuing about the same, the actor went on to say, “The thing became a great start into advertising as such. It kind of got me a lot of brownie points from the intelligentsia. The people who write social commentary saw it as a big step where a mainstream Bollywood actor in this sort of space, spoke openly and celebrated sex as opposed to treating it as anything dirty. I am still very hung up about the creatives. “
Divulging about his first time, Ranveer agrees he started journeying too early. He said, “I was 12 or something. It was obviously with an older woman. I started everything early. In school, my friends’ mothers thought of me as the rotten apple who is spoiling their kids. I used to hold sermons, with all the boys around me and would teach them. They would gape at me with speechless expressions and wide eyes. The things they hadn’t even heard about, I could write a thesis on (laughs). I have got into a lot of trouble and I am remembered as the naughty boy!”
Ranveer Singh definitely rendered some dignity to idea of having sex. The use of condoms is still a pertinent issue in rural and semi-rural India and when a Bollywood celebrity associates himself with a brand, endorsing the use of condoms, he certainly is educating millions via the same.
