Watch or not? It might be Laapata from movie theaters now ,thanks to Bond #23 and Luv Shav.. but would definitely be one among those movies that you must have watched this year, but missed . Try and have a dekko.

Watch or Not: Rajpal Yadav’s directorial debut is a treat that leaves a far more sweeter taste in your mouth than you would have imagined . A lighter satirical take on the current corrupt political & social system, bureaucratic hassles, the ills that prevail in the society and a common man’s fight for the truth and survival in a dog-eat-dog world.
The movie starts off with Chaturvedi(Rajpal Yadav) claiming that his bungalow – Dwarka Sadan has gone missing from Swapnaloka colony of Izzat Nagar ! (an imaginary place in resemblance to the nation with a population of 1.25 Crores) . Yadav’s claim receives awe and disbelief from a recently-promoted, nervous and funny police inspector Satya Prakash Chaubey(Ashutosh Rana) who is forced to lodge an FIR, an FIR which leads to a further chaos all around with politicians, media, claim companies and janta involved in a legal tussle. Will Chaturvedi be able to reclaim his land? Or will he get a place somewhere else as a compensation? Will he be lost in the political corridors , being a tamaasha for the cameras or will the mango man win this battle ?
Ata Pata Laapata Review: Script Analysis
Written by Mohd.Saleem the script is one that highlights the evils of the society and yes the satirical take with the media included and playing a role itself is a slight reminder to Peepli Live, more so because the plight is quite common here too. However an abrupt ending plays spoilsport, the writer gives a half-hearted verdict on the plight and the audience is left a bit baffled, apart from this its all in all a decently well written movie.

Ashutosh Rana as the Police inspector Satya Prakash Chaubey amidst confusion all around stands out at the beginning and Rajpal Yadav takes over the baton from where Rana leaves it. One would find Yadav in various avatars, he has really put in everything he can, even a mujra for that matter! Add to this Vikram Gokhale, Yashpal Sharma, Govind Namdeo, Mukesh Joshi, Mukesh Tiwari and Vijay Raaz and you get an ensemble cast with almost everyone of them getting decent screen space, making it a helluva joyful ride with laughter and pot-shots at every bent of the road. Dara Singh play a cameo as the head of the Insaaf Ki Adaalat, a take on the Jan Lok Pal, and is controlling and commanding. It was great to see him back on the screen, his last outing .
Ata Pata Laapata Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects
Rajpal Yadav’s directorial debut has a few aces that were just waiting to be launched. The opening scene and the one before the intermission are a thing of the genius, leaving you with a smile. The Dialogues are quite realistic keeping in mind that there’s a theatre-play-like mode of storytelling. But where Ata Pata Laapata lacks is its lip-synching, there are large portions in the movie when one can easily make out that the dialogues were dubbed later on and the lips do lie, a thing which puts you off at times. The soundtrack is nothing much to crave about generally, as in you wont have them in your mobiles later on, but they are well timed in the movie and take the story forward. A more well descriptive ending might have helped the movie though, it’s a hush-hush affair in the last.

Ata Pata Laapata deserves a genuine 3* from my desk . It might be Laapata from movie theaters now ,thanks to Bond #23 and Luv Shav.. but would definitely be one among those movies that you must have watched this year, but missed . Try and have a dekko. Rajpal Yadav has delivered a wonderful surprise , one that’s garnished with populist sentiment and leaves a far greater impact than just a documentary.
P.S. – Don’t miss the initial 5 minutes, there’s a Kabbadi match that brings a smile initially.
