The year 2012 is turning out to be a good year for Bollywood with most of the films arriving with even fair level of anticipation working at the box office. This can be evidenced from the fact that except for Agent Vinod, Players and Jodi Breakers, practically every other film supported by decent promotion, credibility and some face value at the least has done succeeded. When it comes to medium/low budgeted affairs, just a few weeks back it was Paan Singh Tomar and Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya which did well in quick succession. Now it’s going to be the turn of Vicky Donor and Hate Story.

The film’s opening weekend went entirely as per the plan as Vicky Donor was supposed to hold centre-stage in multiplexes while Hate Story was meant for multiplexes. This is how the collections behaved as well, resulting in collections that were almost similar. While the John Abraham production raked in close to Rs. 8 crore in its first three days, Vikram Bhatt backed Hate Story managed close to Rs. 7 crore. What has also worked well for both these films is acceptance from the target audience as a result of which the Monday held up pretty well too.

The way both films are going at the box office, they are commercial successes already and it would be interesting to see how far they go from here. If there was no competition ahead of them in the second week, they could have easily reached Rs. 20 crore mark each. However with Tezz as mighty competition and expected to eat up shows at multiplexes as well as single screens, it is going to be a wait and watch situation for both films.

Still, the job is done for Vicky Donor and Hate Story, both being low-budget films, as an above-average verdict is clearly on the anvil. Moreover with satellite, music and home video rights bringing in added moolah, the producers are already in the profit zone. All in all, a happy situation for Bollywood which has already seen close to half a dozen mid/low budget films turning out to be successful this year.
