Box Office - Bastar has a low weekend

It was a low weekend for Bastar as 2 crores* were accumulated. The film didn’t open well on Friday, and then growth over the next two days wasn’t huge either. The film needed a miraculous turnaround to have some sort of a chance during the weekdays, but then day-on-day increment in numbers wasn’t really there, as a result of which the first weekend has turned out to be rather underwhelming.

There is now no comparison whatsoever with The Kerala Story, which was by the same team as it had a huge pre-release buzz, a super controversial promo, a subject that ignited debates, a narrative that was hard-hitting, the critical acclaim which was huge and the word of mouth which was largely positive.

In terms of the budget and the making, Bastar has its costs under control, and the good part is that the makers (producer Vipul Shah and director Sudipto Sen) haven’t gone overboard with their spends. Still, a good theatrical business has its own charm, and everyone expects that when a film arrives on the big screen.

One now waits to see how do Monday numbers look like. At the very least, they need to be on the same lines as Friday and then stay stable like that right till Thursday. If that doesn’t turn out to be the case then it would be a one-week show for Bastar.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
