In the 17th century Malabar region in Kerala, Thevan (Arjun Ashokan) and Koran (Manikandan Achari) evaded capture by the Portuguese slave traders in Ponnani and sought refuge to the east. While camping along the Bharatappuzha River one night, tragedy strikes as Koran falls victim to a yakshi’s (beautiful female ghost) attack. Alone and frightened, Thevan escapes, stumbling upon an abandoned mansion the following day.

Caught in the act of stealing a coconut by the cook (Sidharth Bharathan) of the household and brought before the master of the estate, Kodumon Potti (Mammootty). Potti, impressed by Thevan’s musical talent, urges him to spend the night despite his initial reluctance. However, while guiding Thevan to his room, the cook warns him against probing into the house or the master’s history.

In the following days, he learns from the cook that the potti is descended from Chudalan Potti, who was bestowed a helper, a Chaathan, by the goddess Varahi. However, Chudalan Potti’s relentless mistreatment of the Chaathan drove it to madness, resulting in the tragic demise of Chudalan Potti and his family. Kodumon Potti eventually subdued the Chaathan and imprisoned it in the mansion’s attic.

One day, Thevan observes the cook digging a grave in the backyard, sparking fear that it might be intended for him. Desperate to flee, he realizes he’s lost his memory and has been trapped in the mansion for months. Shockingly, the cook reveals that the grave isn’t for Thevan but Kodumon. The true master of the mansion is the Chaathan in disguise, who imprisoned the real Kodumon in the attic, driving him to madness and eventual demise. To escape, they must defeat the Chaathan by extinguishing an ever-burning lamp hidden in a secret chamber beneath the mansion and confining the creature in a unique chest.

Amidst a heated argument, the cook stealthily snatches the key to the chamber from the Chaathan’s possession. Unlocking the lair, he extinguishes the lamp, stripping the Chaathan of its power. Thevan and the cook ignite the Chaathan’s disguised form, revealing the creature within. Unveiling his true identity as Kodumon’s illegitimate son, the cook tries to don the ring, believing it grants control over the Chaathan. However, Thevan intervenes, recognizing its potential to corrupt; his reasoning is that power like this shouldn’t be possessed by humans. As they grapple, a raging fire engulfs the mansion, ultimately collapsing upon them amidst their struggle.

Surviving the chaos, the cook encounters Thevan outside the compound, only to realize it’s not the real Thevan but the Chaathan in disguise. Fearing for his life, he flees into a nearby river. Mistaken for a lunatic, he meets his demise at the hands of a Portuguese soldier. Meanwhile, unaware of the supernatural events, a battalion of Portuguese soldiers advances towards the mansion. As the Chaathan wanders into the forest, the once-standing mansion lies in ruins, marking the end of its dark legacy.
