The red-carpet to the 84th Academy Awards have been rolled in and the winners and losers have been dissected by their fans and haters alike. Like any other award where the winner is chosen by consensus than by any other parameter, there have been grumbling noises about the Academy Awards as well.

While the Screen Guild Awards, Golden Globe Awards & others precede the Oscars and are often used as a barometer to the possible winners of the Oscars themselves, Bollywood awards seems to be missing out on any sort of consensus about who the best director, actor, actress or film is. Moreover, while the Academy Awards are considered to be the final word when it comes to the best on the silver screen, the Filmfare awards (which hope to be the Bollywood equivalent of the Oscars) have lost their essence over the years.

Since we don’t have an Oscar equivalent to pan or praise, we put together data from the Filmfare, Zee Cine Awards, Screen Awards and Stardust Awards given away for films in 2011 and found certain startling trends. Here they are:

Hits Ignored

While The Dirty Picture and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara were the two clear winners when it came to the Best Film of 2011, several other super-hits and hits — Bodyguard, Singham, Ready, Murder 2, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Ragini MMS  included — were completely ignored.  Put together, The Dirty Picture won three Best Film awards while ZNMD took home two trophies. Interestingly, Rockstar was anointed as the Best Film (Popular) in Zee Cine Awards. And the Colors Screen Awards couldn’t decide between TDP and ZNMD, so they gave away two Best Film trophies!

Note: Although several other hit films were ignored, The Dirty Picture and ZNMD, were also very successful at the box-office. View an exhaustive list of 2011’s hits and flops here.

Rising Superstar

The Rockstar of the year, Ranbir Kapoor, was the favourite of all the juries. The fact that he was chosen over Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Ajay Devgan goes to prove that he is well on his way to being the next superstar. Though, Shah Rukh Khan did win the Best Actor (Critics) trophy at Zee Cine Awards.

Female Consensus

A Dirty Vidya Balan was unanimously the Best Actor (Female) across all awards. This is the only category where everyone seemed to agree.

Directors Galore

Directors who made the cut: Milan Luthria, Zoya Akhtar and Imtiaz Ali.

The variations in choice for best directors — Milan Luthria, Zoya Akhtar and Imtiaz Ali – across awards goes to show that Bollywood is finally looking at a matured crop of filmmakers who can deliver box-office hits and good films, sometimes both in one film!

Support Staff

Some also-rans and some news faces won the awards for the best Supporting Actors. Farhan Akhtar, Saif Ali Khan, Aditi Rao Hydari, Rani Mukerji and Swara Bhaskar made the cut. Their performances, of course, were brilliant!

Music Maestro

A. R. Rahman, India’s export to Hollywood, was the only winner when it came to Best Music category.

Writing Matters

A varied bunch of films, I Am Kalam, Delhi Belly, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and The Dirty Picture, won its writers the best script, screenplay and dialogue awards.
