Director Vikram Bhatt returns to his favourite genre, horror, with Haunted 3D, releasing this Friday (May 6th, 2011). Koimoi.com lists 10 things you didn’t know about the film, starring Mithun Chakraborty’s son, Mahaakshay, and newbie Tia Bajpai.
1. ‘Haunted 3D’ is India’s first stereoscopic 3D film. It has used the latest digital 3D cinematography and projection techniques seen in James Cameron’s Avatar (2009). In fact, director Vikram Bhatt conceived the idea of a 3D horror film after he saw ‘Avatar’ in Los Angeles. “I began to wonder when we could make such a film here,” he says.

2. A team of Hollywood technicians who have worked on films like Resident Evil – The Afterlife, Saw 7 and The Incredible Hulk was a part of the ‘Haunted 3D’ unit. The special effects for the film were executed at EFX Prasad Studios, Chennai, India.
3. Director Vikram Bhatt’s daughter, Krishna, makes her acting debut in ‘Haunted 3D’. Krishna also assisted her father during the making of the film.
4. This is Vikram Bhatt’s fourth horror film after Raaz (2002), 1920 (2008) and Shaapit (2010).
5. Shooting the film in 3D was an arduous process. “The first 10 days were so difficult, I felt like giving it all up and shooting the film in 2D!,” Bhatt explains. The unit’s were multiplied by the fact that the film was being shot in the hill station of Ooty. “Even if we had to replace a wire, we had to go all the way to Bangalore.”
6. Reportedly, this is also Vikram Bhatt’s most expensive project till date. The production budget of the film is Rs. 85 million, of which 27 million was spent on shooting the film in 3D.
7. Mimoh Chakraborty, who had made his acting debut in Jimmy (2008), has adopted the screen name of Mahakshay for this film. Even Tia Bajpai’s name was shortened. Her real name is Twinkle Bajpai.
8. Tia, who makes her acting debut in the film, has also lent her voice to a song in the film. Incidentally, she was a contestant in the TV show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
9. The voice of Mahaakshay’s character has been dubbed by Vikram Bhatt himself. Incidentally, Bhatt has lent his voice to almost every film that he makes.
10. Around 270 3D prints of ‘Haunted 3D’ be screened across theaters in India from 6th May.
