Urmila Matondkar began her career as a child artist in 1981 with the film Kalyug. In 1983, she played Pinky; daughter of Naseeruddin Shah in Shekhar Kapur’s critically acclaimed film Masoom.

Urmila played her first lead role opposite Sunny Deol in Narsimha in the year 1991.

Her performance in Ram Gopal Varma’s film Rangeela (1995) established her as a reliable actress in Bollywood. In the film, she played role of an aspiring actress, Milli, opposite Aamir Khan. Rangeela was a critical, commercial and a musical hit.

Urmila’s role in Judaai (1997) was highly appreciated by audiences and critics. Urmila played role of Janhvi, who falls for Anil Kapoor, who plays Sreedevi’s husband  in the film.

Ram Gopal Varma’s thriller Satya (1998) earned Urmila wide acclaim and a Filmfare nomination.

Apart from her acting skills, Urmila Matondkar is known for her dancing. She is still remembered for her item songs, Chamma Chamma and Aaiye Aajaye, from the films China Gate (1998) and Lajja (2001) respectively.

During the early 2000s Urmilla delivered a number of critically acclaimed performances in films like Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2001), Pinjar (2003) and Bhoot (2003).

Her last release was Karzzzz (2008) in which she starred opposite Himesh Reshammiya. The film was a remake of 1980’s hit film of the same name but it failed at the box-office.
